SPARC

The Student Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Program (SPARC) was established in September 1999 with the idea of developing educational projects and materials for students at all levels, but particularly K-12. The first school to officially join SPARC in an effort to accomplish the PARC mission was East Aiken Elementary School in Aiken, South Carolina.

East Aiken Elementary School "Make A Difference Day"

On October 23, 1999, East Aiken Elementary School participated in the nationwide "Make A Difference Day." The project chosen by East Aiken was the construction of a small permanent pond and a seasonal wetland to 1) serve as an outdoor science lab, and 2) enhance habitat for herps. Twelve kids, seven teachers and a principal, a couple of researchers, a few parents, and an Aiken County Sheriff's Deputy helped build the wetlands. The goal is to provide a wetland continuum in a very small space--permanent water for turtles and other relatively aquatic critters on one side, and an ephemeral (fish-free) pond for many amphibian species on the other side. The volunteers dug, lined, and planted. Volunteers also constructed two benches that turn into tables to put adjacent to the wetland area. The "folding science stations" have slats on the tops to secure microscopes that will be used in studying the new habitat. Students, teachers, scientists, and parents working together made a very interesting and fun day for all.
