Amphibian Monitoring Field Technicians
Agency: Northern Rockies Conservation Cooperative, Jackson, WY

Job description: Short-term field work positions for 4 people,
starting approximately June 7 and ending by Aug 6. This is the 10th
year of a project sponsored by the National Park Service and USGS
Amphibian Research & Monitoring Initiative. Duties include hiking to
wetlands, conducting daytime surveys for amphibians, and entering data
in PDAs. Most workdays include long hikes away from roads and trails;
backpacking is required for some of the sampling targets.
Accommodations in Yellowstone consist of simple bunkhouse quarters with
kitchen facilities. Cell phone coverage is limited and email is not
available at the field station. This is a memorable job, providing an
opportunity to become acquainted with many portions of Yellowstone.

Qualifications: Experience in wildlife surveys and a keen interest in
natural history are required. Previous work with amphibians is
preferred but not essential. Candidates should be in excellent physical
condition, be willing to work with one other person in grizzly bear
country, and have the endurance for long hikes over rough terrain in
sometimes adverse conditions including abundant biting insects.
Applicants must show that they have experience in back-country camping
and off-trail hiking, and have skills in map-reading and use of GPS. We
are looking for people who are meticulous with data collection and
competent with computers. Employees must be flexible about work
schedules, which are tailored tocomplete the surveys within the short
field season. Training and certification in first aid is recommended.
Employees need to provide their own hiking/camping gear (backpack,
sleeping bag, good hiking boots, etc). Equipment specific to amphibian
surveys is provided (waders, nets). Your own transportation is needed
to reach the field station, which is 80-100 miles from the nearest towns
with airports.

Pay: $12.00 per hour. We anticipate about 345 hours per person.
Housing is provided inside Yellowstone. Vehicles are provided for work
use.

Last Date to apply: March 6, 2010. Earlier applications may receive
preference.

To Apply: Email the following items: a cover letter that describes
your relevant experience, with an attached list of backpack trips
(places, dates, and hiking distance on and off trail); your resume, and
three references with contact information (phone number and email).
