BIOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN - SOUTHWESTERN FLORIDA

Job Description: The Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of
Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center is seeking a full time field
technician to work on amphibian and mammal sampling as part of monitoring ecological
responses to ecosystem restoration in southwestern Florida.

Duties include: Amphibian sampling will include visual encounter and acoustic surveys for
calling anuran amphibians, along with dipnet and trap surveys for tadpoles. Mammals will
be sampled by camera traps, live traps, and driving surveys. Field work will involve
nocturnal surveys in the Picayune Strand, Fakahatchee Strand, Florida Panther National
Wildlife Refuge, and the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Applicants must be willing to work
at night in remote areas under sometimes strenuous and inclement conditions.

Qualifications: A Bachelors' Degree in Ecology, Wildlife Biology or related field is required.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS/GPS software and equipment is essential. The ability to
operate boats and all-terrain vehicles, and experience maintaining field equipment and
vehicles (boats, airboats, trailers, etc.) is beneficial. Applicants must be independent, self-
motivated, and able to solve problems in the field. A positive attitude and the ability to
work independently, as well as with others are essential. Hours can sometimes be long and
irregular. Possession of a valid Florida driver's license will be required. Exceptional
organizational skills, accurate data recording and attention to detail are necessary.
Wilderness experience preferred.

Salary: Dependent upon qualifications, education, and experience ($13-15).

Position Starts: As soon as a suitable candidate is identified. Appointment is for one year
and can be extended upon successful completion of duties and continuation of funding.
