
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN POPULATION ECOLOGY

We seek a post-doctoral research associate interested in population ecology to investigate
issues related to demography of Desert Tortoises (Gopherus agassizii), with special
emphasis on developing a population viability model that integrates relationships between
threats to tortoise populations (e.g., predators, roads, drought) and their demography.
The incumbent will work closely with the Desert Tortoise Recovery Office of U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service and the Desert Tortoise Science Advisory Committee.
Primary responsibilities: Assemble, analyze, and synthesize existing demographic data to
develop a population viability model for desert tortoises. Take a leadership role in
preparing manuscripts and technical reports for publication. Travel occasionally to meet
with cooperators across the country and to participate in field sampling. There will be
opportunities to investigate additional questions related to recovery of desert tortoises
throughout their geographic range.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in wildlife science, ecology, zoology, or closely related field.
Background and experience with quantitative tools relevant to population ecology, a
strong work ethic, and good verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by a
record of peer-reviewed publications.
Preferred Qualifications: Expertise with GIS.
Anticipated Start Date: March 2010 (flexible).
Support: Salary of approximately $40,000 per year for two years, which includes full health
benefits, but no retirement benefits.
