
Field Technician
Eastern box turtle FIELD TECHNICIAN
Seeking fulltime, highly motivated field technician from May through September 2008 (dates flexible) for ongoing field research examining movements and population structure of eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina) in the Connecticut River Valley in Massachusetts.
Responsibilities include: Radio-telemetry, field surveys, marking and measuring turtles, collecting data related to habitat characteristics, vegetation identification, navigating with GPS, data entry, talking to landowners, and leading small groups of volunteers in survey efforts.
Applicants must:
-be in good physical condition and able to walk long distances over rough terrain
-be willing to work long hours, particularly in June, in a variety of weather conditions
-have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle to get to multiple field sites throughout the valley
-feel comfortable working independently in local forests
-demonstrate a working knowledge of local flora (or have a desire to learn)
Previous telemetry, GPS, and animal handling experience preferred, but not required.
Salary ~$9-10/hour, experience and funding dependent (does not include housing).
