Vernal Pool Biologists (2)
Two vernal pool biologists are needed from March 24th to July 11th (dates are flexible). Technicians will assist in protecting water quality in southeastern Massachusetts vernal pools. Work will involve travel to pools to acquire pool and water quality parameters, determine presence/absence of amphibians, and collect biological samples for analyses. Technicians should be willing to learn about new environments, have patience with volunteers, be able to handle long days with extensive automobile travel in a suburban environment, and be able to deal with an abundance of ticks and mosquitoes. Housing is dormitory-style; however, 2 nights per week may be spent in hotels in an effort to minimize vehicle usage. A project description can be found at www.manomet.org/programs/wildlife/. Technicians may be able to participate in other programs at Manomet, including passerine banding. Manomet offers an excellent opportunity to participate in and contribute to science-based conservation planning and implementation.
Qualifications: Degree in biology, wildlife/conservation management or equivalent, good writing and communication skills, knowledge of Word and Excel, and a familiarity with fieldwork required. Knowledge of New England amphibian life-stages, invertebrates, and other vernal pool inhabitants a plus, but not necessary. Pay is $1720 per month. Housing on beautiful Cape Cod Bay is provided. Applications are due March 12th. Please send letter of interest, resume and 3 references to Stephanie Schmidt at waterbirds@manomet.org or Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences, PO Box 1770, Manomet, MA 02345, (508) 224-6521, Fax (508) 224-9220.
